This project was an opportunity to inhabit one of New York’s most recognisable buildings and respond to it with care and intent. In this space we strived to capture an energy that comes from the building itself—a synergy between the spaces rather than arriving as a new, unfamiliar neighbour.
We borrowed directly from the building, utilising red travertine, stainless steel and glossy wood as our primary materials, reinterpreting them into something quieter but still confident and contemporary. The space is shaped through line and light: steel creates a strong framework, referencing New York’s Art Deco language, while a continuous timber datum softens and connects the room.
Bringing everything together is a 9ft circular oculus, framed in faceted and curved timber, glowing down onto the centralised counters. This moment sets the tone on entry—countering the darkness of the street—and is echoed in more subtle ways throughout.
